Volcanoes

A jewel in Rwanda’s crown, offers an unparalleled encounter with nature’s grandeur and our closest living relatives – the mountain gorillas. Nestled within the Virunga Massif, a chain of volcanic mountains straddling the borders of Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo, this park boasts breathtaking landscapes, diverse ecosystems, and the chance to trek through the rainforest in search of these magnificent primates.

A Realm of Volcanic Majesty

Volcanoes National Park unfolds in a dramatic landscape sculpted by volcanic forces. Five dormant volcanoes, including Mount Karisimbi, the highest volcano in Rwanda, dominate the skyline. Clouds often cloak the peaks, adding to the mystical aura of this enchanting place. Lush rainforests blanket the slopes, teeming with life and offering a glimpse into the heart of a thriving ecosystem. Whether you’re exploring on foot or gazing upon the vistas from a scenic viewpoint, Volcanoes National Park’s beauty will leave you spellbound.

Tracking the Gentle Giants

The undisputed highlight of Volcanoes National Park is the chance to encounter mountain gorillas. These awe-inspiring creatures, sharing over 98% of our DNA, live in family groups led by a dominant silverback male. Embark on a once-in-a-lifetime gorilla tracking experience, venturing into the rainforest with experienced guides. Witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat, observe their social interactions, and be captivated by their intelligence and peaceful demeanor. Permits for gorilla trekking are limited and in high demand, so booking in advance is essential.

A Tapestry of Life

Volcanoes National Park is a haven for biodiversity. Beyond the iconic gorillas, the park boasts over 200 species of mammals. Look out for the golden monkey, with its stunning golden fur, or keep an eye out for shy antelope species and a variety of smaller creatures. Over 1,700 bird species have been recorded here, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Listen for the melodic calls of the black and white colobus monkey, or spot the vibrant plumage of the Ruwenzori turaco flitting through the trees.
